The Days of Youth:
On October 2, 1869 Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Kathiawar to Karamchand and Putlibai Gandhi. He was born to a middle class family that lived in Vaishya Castle. Gandhi's grandfather grew to be the prime minister of Porbandar he was soon replaced by his son, Gandhi's father.
Mahatma Gandhi attended a public elementary school in Porbandar. he struggled on school and found it hard to grasp the concept of multiplication. At the age of seven Gandhi and his family relocated to Rajkot a neighboring state in Kathiawar. It was here that Gandhi joined a primary school and later attended a high school. Gandhi recalls his school years saying that his "Intellect must have been sluggish and my memory raw." At the age of thirteen he was married to his wife, Kasturbai who was also thirteen.
After finishing his high school education Gandhi was admitted to Samaldas College in Bhavnagar. At the same time his father passed away in 1885. a family friend recommended that if Gandhi wanted to take his fathers place he should become a barrister. Gandhi liked that idea so he decided t0 take a boat from Bombay to England. On September 4, 1888 he set sail on a boat
to Southampton, England.
During his first few days in England Gandhi became very homesick. He also had troubles with his food choices. Gandhi was a vegetarian, he describes the food in England as "tasteless and insipid." One day while walking the streets he wandered upon a vegetarian restaurant and truly enjoyed the food he had. From that moment on Gandhi made it his mission to spread vegetarianism to the people he met.
His years in London changed him. He bought new clothes and "wasted" money on things such as suits and chains of gold. While in England Mahatma was introduced to the New Testament and soon fell in love with it. This was a very important part of Gandhi's life because this is what shaped his attitude in life. from here on Gandhi had a mindset to respect all religions and to understand each of them.
After his years in England Gandhi was called to the Bar. So he returned to his home in India. When he got there he learned that his mother had died. While in Rajkot and Bombay Gandhi failed to prove himself to his country. While in his solemn state Gandhi received an offer from Dada Abdulla & Co. He was to move to south Africa and direct a counsel in a lawsuit. Again Gandhi jumped at an unexpected blessing. He left for south africa in 1893.
